ON DEMAND PERSONAL STATEMENT POWER COURSE
For Current and Aspiring Medical Professionals
The #1 obstacle that hinders pre-medical students’ and pre-residents’ professional applications is their ability to coherently convey a strong personal statement that shows and does not tell.
Folks, let’s be real. If you’re a pre-medical student preparing medical school applications or a medical student preparing residency applications, you likely:
- have been dreading the application process without a clue where to start in writing your personal statement
- feel as though writing is not your “strong” suit
- lack the time or energy to focus on developing an excellent statement
- are afraid of what you should (or shouldn’t) include in your essay
Sound Familiar? Don’t be just another application in the stack.
My Story: I’ve been in your exact position
From the time that I began my journey in pursuit of a medical career, I have been weaving together different types of personal statements to reflect my inspiration, desires, history, and contributions to the world around me.
The personal statement, in its many variations, provides a grand opportunity to connect with the reader and potential future academic or professional job opportunities.
As a medical student, resident, fellow, and finally, an attending Plastic and Reconstructive surgeon, I have had the honor of reviewing hundreds of personal statements during the application cycle. I have found that a stellar professional essay can, and has, elevated an excellent candidate to the selected person for the position because of its ability to display another facet of their personality, commitment, and ability to connect with a broader audience, mainly those who would be served most, the patients.
Over the last 20 years, I have provided lectures, private consultations, and group mentoring events regarding professionalism and the creation of descriptive, unique, and engaging personal statements that have garnered coveted interviews and acceptance into desired training programs and professional positions as practicing physicians and other competitive fields in allied health.
The actual issue with submitting a suboptimal personal statement is that it can cost you.
It can cost you an interview invitation.
It can cost you a seat in the class.
It can cost you $$$ that you’ve invested in the cycle.
It can cost you time and most importantly, time from practicing your passion.
The Personal Statement Power Course guides you from brainstorming to presenting a published statement all while ensuring that you stand out during interview season.
Here’s what you will learn:
01 How to Find & Identify Your Voice
Learn how to properly articulate (and determine) experiences and lessons to include in your statement.
02 Recounting Critical and Sensitive Events and Experiences
Hesitant to include sensitive topics that may truly reflect your journey but worried about how the committee will interpret this? Practice with examples and learn how to address critical events and life experiences correctly.
03 Creating clear, concise, and engaging content
One of the greatest struggles in building a strong personal statement is cutting out the fluff and wording your entire life experience into a cohesive statement – no pressure, right?
04 Delivering concrete reasons in support of your candidacy
The purpose of your personal statement is to solidify your candidacy and competitiveness in succeeding as a medical student or resident. Make sure that your statement reflects this.
05 Landing an interview with an expertly-tailored conclusion
Your conclusion paragraph is second-runner up to your opening line. There are a variety of elements an adcom is looking for in that statement.
06 Getting the readers of your statement “hooked”
It’s true, a statement that doesn’t hook in the reader is often skimmed over and not remembered, which isn’t the ideal situation in competing for limited spots in a cohort, right?
